IELTS vs TOEFL: A Detailed Comparison for 2025

Both tests measure English proficiency, but they differ in format, scoring, and which institutions prefer them.

Format Differences

TOEFL is entirely computer-based with typed essays and recorded speaking. IELTS offers paper-based testing and a live speaking interview. Choose the format you are more comfortable with.

Scoring

TOEFL: 0-120 total (30 per section). IELTS: 0-9 band score (averaged across sections). A TOEFL 100 roughly equals IELTS 7.0.

Acceptance

Most universities accept both. TOEFL is more popular in North America. IELTS is more common for UK, Australian, and immigration purposes. Check your target institution’s preference.
