IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which Do You Need?

IELTS comes in two versions, and choosing the wrong one could mean retaking the test.

Academic IELTS

Required for university admission and professional registration. Reading and Writing sections use academic texts and essay-style writing.

General Training IELTS

Used for immigration, work visas, and some vocational programs. Reading uses everyday texts. Writing includes a letter task instead of a report.

Which Do You Need?

If applying to universities, you almost certainly need Academic. If applying for immigration to Canada, Australia, or the UK, check the specific requirements. When in doubt, take Academic since it is accepted everywhere.
