What’s on the Digital SAT Math Section?
The Digital SAT Math section consists of two modules, each lasting 35 minutes with 22 questions. The second module adapts in difficulty based on your performance in the first — score well on Module 1, and Module 2 gets harder (but is worth more points). Total: 44 questions in 70 minutes.

Linear equations in one variable: You’ll solve equations like 3x + 7 = 22 and interpret what the solution means in context. The SAT loves embedding these in word problems — a question might describe a phone plan’s monthly cost and ask you to find when two plans cost the same amount.
Systems of linear equations: Expect to solve two-equation systems by substitution or elimination. Key insight: if a system has no solution, the lines are parallel (same slope, different y-intercepts). If it has infinite solutions, the equations describe the same line.
Linear inequalities: Same skills as equations, but remember to flip the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative number. On the digital SAT, you may be asked to graph solution sets or identify which region satisfies a system of inequalities.
Advanced Math: Where Scores Separate (35% of Your Score)
This is where mid-range scorers often lose points. If you’re aiming for 700+, you must be fluent in these topics:
Quadratic equations: Know how to factor, use the quadratic formula, and complete the square. Understand the discriminant (b² – 4ac): positive means two real solutions, zero means one, negative means none. The vertex form y = a(x – h)² + k is your best friend for identifying the maximum or minimum of a parabola.
Polynomial and rational functions: Be comfortable with dividing polynomials and finding zeros. For rational expressions, watch out for values that make the denominator zero — these are excluded from the domain and often show up as trick answer choices.
Exponential functions: Growth and decay problems are common. Remember: f(x) = a · bˣ where a is the initial value and b is the growth/decay factor. If b > 1, it’s growth; if 0 < b < 1, it's decay.
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (15%)
These questions test your ability to work with real-world data. They tend to be more reading-heavy, so practice interpreting tables, scatterplots, and bar graphs quickly.
Ratios and percentages: Many students rush through these and make careless errors. When a question says “the price increased by 20%, then decreased by 20%,” the final price is NOT back to the original — it’s 96% of the original (1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96).
Statistics: Know the difference between mean, median, and mode. Understand how outliers affect the mean (they pull it toward the outlier) but not the median. Be comfortable reading box plots and understanding standard deviation conceptually — you won’t calculate it, but you should know that a larger spread means a larger standard deviation.
Geometry and Trigonometry (15%)
While this is the smallest section, these questions can be quick wins if you know the formulas. The SAT provides a reference sheet with key formulas, but you shouldn’t be seeing them for the first time on test day.
Essential formulas to memorize: Area of a triangle (½bh), Pythagorean theorem (a² + b² = c²), circle area (πr²) and circumference (2πr), and the special right triangles (30-60-90 and 45-45-90). For trigonometry, know SOH-CAH-TOA and that sin(x) = cos(90° – x).
Circles on the coordinate plane: The equation (x – h)² + (y – k)² = r² describes a circle centered at (h, k) with radius r. The SAT may give you an expanded form and ask you to complete the square to find the center and radius.
5 High-Impact Strategies for SAT Math
1. Master the Desmos calculator. The built-in graphing calculator is more powerful than most students realize. You can graph equations, find intersection points, create tables of values, and even solve systems of equations visually. Practice using Desmos before test day — it can turn a 2-minute algebra problem into a 20-second graph-and-check.
2. Plug in numbers. When a question uses variables and the answer choices are expressions, try substituting simple numbers (like 2 or 3) for the variables. Calculate the answer with your chosen numbers, then check which answer choice gives the same result. This strategy is nearly foolproof for “which expression is equivalent” questions.
3. Work backwards from answer choices. For multiple-choice questions asking “what value of x satisfies this equation,” try plugging in each answer choice. Start with choice B or C (they’re often in order), and you can quickly narrow down the correct answer.
4. Watch your time per question. You have roughly 1 minute and 35 seconds per question. If a question is taking more than 2 minutes, flag it and move on. The adaptive format means that getting the easier questions right in Module 1 is more important than struggling with hard ones.
5. Practice under realistic conditions. Take full-length, timed practice tests to build stamina and familiarity with the format. Use official College Board tests and high-quality third-party tests that mirror the adaptive format.
