Should You Retake the SAT? When It Makes Sense
Most students improve their SAT score on a retake, but not always enough to justify the time and cost.
When to Retake
If your score is below your target schools’ middle 50%, retaking makes sense. If you know you underperformed due to illness, anxiety, or lack of preparation, a retake is warranted.
When Not to Retake
If your score is already at or above your target range, the marginal gain likely will not change admissions outcomes. Focus your energy on essays and activities instead.
Maximizing Improvement
Analyze your score report for specific weaknesses. Study those areas intensively for 4-6 weeks before retaking. Do not just retake and hope for the best.
