SAT Reading: How to Tackle Science and History Passages
Science and history passages on the SAT can feel unfamiliar, but they follow predictable patterns that you can learn to navigate.
Science Passages
Focus on the central claim and how evidence supports it. You do not need prior science knowledge. Read the data presented and answer based on what the passage provides.
History Passages
These often feature older language and founding documents. Focus on the author’s main argument and rhetorical techniques. Understanding historical context helps but is not required.
Universal Approach
For both types: read actively, identify the main idea, and always verify your answer with specific text evidence.
